This morning the girls wanted to try a cucumber face mask. I bought the mask with the intent of having a fun girl's night of beauty. They were anxious to try it so I put it on both the girls. They needed to wait 10 minutes to let it dry which seemed like forever for them. Dahlia thought their faces looked shiny like a glazed donut. Yes…she is a little donut obsessed. Dahlia's mask dried first so I started to peel her mask off her neck. She started screaming like I was tearing off her skin. Monti looked terrified. Monti panicked saying "wash it off, wash it off." Once Dahlia was able to control the peeling process herself she was fine. Monti insisted on washing it off. Overall it was a traumatic experience.

Soccer team pizza party
Here is the reason Monti plays soccer. She loves the final party where
she hangs out with her team and receives her trophy. She loves to brag
about how she already has 3 soccer trophies. -
It is hard being 4
Dahlia seems to get upset at anything these days. In this picture she
was upset because Monti received a letter from her grandma and she
didn't. The letter contained only money for her walk-a-thon but Dahlia
was crushed. -
Bounce house play
Solomon and Captiva, the neighbor kids, were over on Sunday playing in the bounce house. Our girls love to play the “damsels in distress”. I would love to raise girls who are strong, confident and not looking for a man to rescue them but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards for Monti. It is just too much fun being rescued. Just look at the helplessness on her face. Of course Dahlia just follows Monti’s lead waiting for Solomon to rescue them both.

Fireballs heat up!
Five of the girls on her team were at the birthday party an hour before the game. They loaded up on popcorn, pizza, potato chips and chocolate cake. On top of the completely loaded bellies the girls had to deal with nearly 90 degree temperatures. I was expecting things to get pretty ugly. One girl had already vomited at the party from all the food. The Fireballs dominated. After about the 11th goal our team scored Joe whispered to me, ” If this were baseball the slaughter rule would be in effect.”

Bowling birthday party
Monti had a birthday party at Lucky Strike Bowling Alley on Saturday. It was a very cool bowling alley complete with runway lights between alleys, glow-in-the-dark balls, and huge screens displaying artsy images above the bowling pins. Even the rental shoes had been updated. The kids had cute velcro fastened grey and red shoes. I have always had a fondness for bowling shoes (I must admit to taking a pair when I was a teenager after the rental counter wouldn’t let me buy the shoes from them) After an hour of bowling the girls would simply throw their ball down the lane and then head back to their seats without ever glancing to see what they hit.

Walk-a-thon at Monti’s school
Monti in action. It was a beautiful day here – 78 degrees.
A single lap around the school yard is approximately 1/4 mile. Each time around parents added a tick mark to the student’s back to keep track of total laps completed. Monti finished 13 laps in an hour. Her friend Knicole, in this picture, completed 19 laps. Monti achieved her goal of beating her own record from last year- 12 laps completed.

A conversation with Monti
Tonight Monti and I had some alone time. I asked her if there was one thing she would change about Daddy what would it be. She answered, ” I wish he didn’t have to work so much.” When I asked about myself she answered, ” I wish you weren’t so crabby all the time.” (I will need to work on that) I then asked her to come up with one thing she would change about herself. Without much thought at all she said, “I wish my eyes weren’t so ugly.” She explained that her eyes are not like anyone else’s eyes in her class. She hates how dark they are. She wishes they would sparkle more.
She was so sad that no one compliments her eyes. I asked her, “Well what do you get compliments on?” She said, “Only compliments about how smart I am.”

The battle in Dahlia’s belly
Poor Dahlia had the stomach flu last week. She has always had a certain knack for describing how her body feels. In the morning I knew we were in trouble when she told me there were “monsters dancing in her belly”. Later that evening, after being sick all day, she told me there was a battle going on in her tummy between the good monsters and the bad monsters. The bad monsters were fighting with guns. The good monster had swords. No wonder she was having a hard time keeping food down … those good monsters needed better weapons.
