    trick or treat in Talus

    After raining all day the skies cleared up for Halloween night. The
    ghouls and goblins of the neighborhood came out to try their best to
    spook the kids. We had an awesome window animation projected onto our
    front window. It received many rave reviews from the kids and adults
    in the neighborhood but unfortunately there were a few little ones who
    skipped our house completely due to fright. On the top of our hill
    there were adults with a keg of beer in a wagon pouring liquid treats
    for the adults out with their kids. Everyone was in great spirits. They were  
    simply thrilled to have a dry relatively warm (in the 50’s) Halloween
    in Seattle. Of course it helped it was also a Friday.

    A good mess is always the sign of a great party! Monti was very sweet when she thanked me at the end of the night for letting her have the Halloween party but when she asked about having another one next year I could only say “Maybe.”

    What would a Fleck Fright Night be without dancing? The kids did partake in some dance moves in the media room. Joe had the iTunes visualizer running up on the big screen which the kids enjoyed playing with. The media room setup would have been great for our old “before kids” parties. Some of our regular guests could have used the extra room showing off their personal favorite dance moves.

    The final lesson was to make Dragon Bellyworms. The spell went something like this:

    Beetle eggs and vampire pee
    Gooey, gluey wait and see
    Atomic worms pulled from the cups
    Witches’ pets instead of pups.

    The young witches painted enchanted paper with the sweat from giants to reveal their special name for the evening. Names that appeared on
    the golden paper included Maven, Piper , Willow, Volos and many other equally magical names.

    Each child received a little booklet to use as a guide for their witch’s training. They did 3 lessons which included; Revealing their witch’s name, making Troll Snot , and making Dragon Bellyworms. The kids were very attentive and everything went off so well.

    I think I could have just made dozens of cupcakes and the kids would have been absolutely satisfied. Of course later in the evening after coming off their sugar highs the kids came crawling back for some cheese, crackers and raw veggies.

    I labeled a variety of containers containing different items you might find in a witch’s laboratory. Items like unicorn blood, elven breath, and rat brains could be found scattered all over the basement ledges and shelves.

  • Witch’s lair

    The basement was set up to do our witch lessons. I had the challenge of making the room dark enough at 5pm to be “witchy” while also allowing the kids to see enough to do their experiments. Black poster board in the windows and funky lighting did the trick. I had to pre-measure and label everything so that the 3 experiments we would do at the party would be easy enough for 10-15 kids. We ended up with 11 kids total.
